Mumbai: Commuter Dies After Slipping While Alighting Local Train at Ghatkopar; Safety Concerns Intensify

Mumbai, 14th June 2025: A tragic incident unfolded at Ghatkopar railway station on Friday evening when a passenger lost his life after slipping onto the tracks while attempting to disembark from a moving local train. The mishap occurred at 8:02 PM on Platform No. 1 of the station, situated on Mumbai’s busy Central Railway Line.

According to officials, the unidentified man was getting off a local train en route from Kalyan to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) when he lost his footing and fell onto the tracks. He was immediately rushed to Rajawadi Hospital for medical assistance but succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

This incident comes close on the heels of another tragic episode earlier in the week, where four passengers died and six others sustained injuries after falling off two overcrowded locals near Diva and Kopar stations in Thane district. The commuters were reportedly hanging onto footboards when the trains crossed each other, leading to a fatal loss of balance and falls onto the tracks around 9:30 AM.

In response to mounting safety concerns, the Railway Board has decided to install automatic doors in all new rakes currently being manufactured for Mumbai’s suburban network. Additionally, existing rakes in service will be modified to include door-closing mechanisms in an effort to curb such avoidable accidents and enhance commuter safety.
