Mumbai: FDA Gets Tough on Hotel Norms: 70 Establishments Face Action in 15 Days, Shut Down Six
Mumbai, 15th September 2023: In a series of decisive actions following the sealing of Mumbai’s renowned Bademiya Hotel, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has intensified its regulatory campaign by targeting other incompliant hotels in Mumbai and its adjacent areas. In the last 15 days, the FDA has taken action against 70 hotels, and six reputed hotels have been directed to remain closed until they comply with the norms.
A case has been registered at the Bandra Police Station after a dead rat was found in the food at Papa Pancho Da Dhaba. Similarly, the FDA has received many complaints regarding filthiness in the kitchen rooms of many renowned hotels in Mumbai. Taking stringent note of it, the FDA has started inspections of all the small and big hotels in the city.
According to the information, there are around 10 thousand vegetarian and non-vegetarian hotels in Mumbai. The FDA inspected the kitchen, cleaning, hygiene of employees, and drinking water in these hotels and has earlier issued notices to as many as 200 hotels in this case.
After giving enough time for compliance, on Wednesday, September 13, in its latest drive against disobedient hotels, the FDA decided to shut down six hotels in the city while taking action against 70 other hotels.
After ‘Papa Pancho Da Dhaba’ in Bandra, famous hotels like ‘Bademiya’ and ‘Mumbai Darbar’ have been found to have poor quality arrangements and unsanitary kitchen conditions. According to FDA officials, food samples from these hotels have been sent to a laboratory for testing, and some hotels have been fined accordingly. On the other hand, “some hotels have been directed to remain closed until they rectify the lapses,” said FDA’s Joint Commissioner (Food), Shailesh Adhaav.
