Mumbai: Massive Fire Erupts In Kurla West Slum Rehabilitation Area Building; No Fatality
Kurla, 16th September 2023: A massive and destructive fire engulfed a Slum Rehabilitation Area building in the Kurla West area on Friday, erupting on the night of September 16. Thanks to the valiant efforts of fire brigade personnel, approximately 50 to 60 individuals trapped within the building were safely evacuated. Tragically, 39 residents suffered from suffocation due to smoke inhalation and have been admitted to Rajawadi Hospital, where authorities confirm their conditions to be stable.
The incident unfolded at the Dr. Bhimrao Raoji Ambedkar housing building, located within the vicinity of Kohinoor Hospital in Kurla. At around 12:00 AM on Friday, a fire suddenly broke out on the building’s ground floor. Residents, upon noticing the flames, promptly vacated their homes and attempted to combat the blaze independently. Meanwhile, local fire brigade personnel reached the scene to confront the escalating inferno. Coordinated efforts by the firefighters successfully brought the fire under control. However, the dense smoke within the building left numerous residents trapped in their houses.
In a courageous act of display, both the Vinoba Bhave Nagar police and dedicated fire brigade teams ascended up to the 12th floor to rescue an estimated 30 to 35 individuals who were trapped within the structure. Remarkably, there were no casualties reported as a result of the fire. Nonetheless, due to smoke inhalation, 39 residents required medical attention and were promptly transported to nearby hospitals. Four of these individuals received care at Kohinoor Hospital, while the remaining 35 were admitted to Rajawadi Hospital. Fortunately, four of those have since been discharged.
Initial investigations point to a short circuit as the probable cause of the fire, although Vinoba Bhave Nagar police are continuing to probe the matter to ascertain further details.
