1,092 Ganesh Idols Immersed on Fifth Day of Festival in Mumbai
Mumbai, 12th September 2024: By Wednesday evening, over 2,500 Ganesh idols had been immersed in Mumbai as part of the ongoing festival dedicated to the elephant-headed deity, according to civic officials. As of 6 pm, a total of 2,574 idols had been immersed in both the sea and artificial ponds, with 2,533 coming from households and 16 from community groups, as reported by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
Throughout the 10-day Ganpati festival, devotees typically bid an emotional farewell to the idols after one-and-a-half days, five days, or seven days. On the fifth day alone, 1,092 idols were immersed, including 1,081 household idols, in artificial ponds set up across the city to minimize pollution of natural water bodies. Additionally, eight community group idols were also immersed in these artificial ponds.
No incidents were reported during the immersions, according to the BMC. The festival, which began on September 7 with Ganesh Chaturthi, is one of the most significant celebrations in Mumbai and across Maharashtra, concluding on September 17 with Anant Chaturdashi.
