Padcare and Pune Municipal Corporation Join Hands for Eco-Friendly Menstrual Hygiene on Women’s Day

Pune, 11th March 2024: PadCare, an organization dedicated to eco-friendly solid waste management and menstrual hygiene, is making a positive impact by producing harmless, recyclable output from sanitary pads. In collaboration with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), PadCare has initiated various activities to benefit women and waste pickers. On Women’s Day, March 7, 2024, PadCare installed 25 sanitary disposal bins in all women’s toilets within the PMC main building as part of a pilot project spanning three months.
This initiative aims to raise awareness among women about proper sanitary waste disposal. Cleaning staff have been trained in the use of these bins, and the accumulated waste will be collected by PadCare staff every 15 days. The use of these bins not only reduces carbon emissions but also saves landfills, and importantly, ensures that sanitation workers no longer need to handle used sanitary pads.
In another effort to celebrate World Women’s Day, the PMC, along with Doctor for Beggars, Dr Abhijit Sonawane’s Kharata (Besom) Paltoon, organized a cleanliness drive in Mahatma Phule Wada, Ganj Peth, and surrounding areas on March 7, 2024. As a tribute to women who were once beggars but are now seeking employment, a campaign was organized with 40-50 women participating. To honour their hard work, these women received new clothes donated by the Soham Trust. The event was attended by PMC Assistant Commissioner Asmita Tambe, Assistant Health Officer Dr Ketaki Ghatge, Dr Abhijit Sonawane, Dr Manisha Sonawane, Senior Health Inspector Mukhtar Syed, and all health inspectors and staff from the Bhawani Peth Regional Office. These initiatives collectively contribute to fostering women’s hygiene, empowerment, and community welfare.
