Mumbai Customs Seize Gold Worth Rs 19.15 Crore Hidden in Undergarments and Luggage

Mumbai, 11th June 2024: In Mumbai, customs authorities have confiscated 32.79 kg of gold, worth ₹19.15 crore, concealed within the undergarments and luggage of two foreign women at the international airport in separate incidents, an official confirmed today.

Upon their arrival at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on Monday, the two passengers from African countries underwent scrutiny due to suspicion, leading to a search operation. In both cases, gold was found concealed within their undergarments and luggage, resulting in the arrest of the women. Further investigations are currently underway.

In a separate incident, a four-day operation conducted at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport yielded the seizure of 12.47 kg of gold and electronic items valued at Rs 8.37 crore, according to an official release from the Customs department.

The operation, carried out from April 29 to May 2, targeted travellers bound for destinations including Dubai, Muscat, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, and Jeddah. Fifteen Indian nationals were intercepted and found carrying 5.32 kg of gold concealed in various methods, such as within jeans pockets, baggage trolley baskets, on their persons, in their undergarments, and even concealed in their rectums.

Additionally, a staff member of the airport was intercepted by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and handed over to Customs officials. Subsequent searches led to the discovery of gold dust in wax form, weighing 2.58 kg, concealed within his water bottle.
