Mumbai Metro 3 Phase 1 Completion Delayed to December 2024, Announces Maharashtra Government

Mumbai, 27th June 2024: Mumbai Metro 3, also known as the Aqua Line, is a significant addition to Mumbai’s transit infrastructure, aimed at alleviating the city’s traffic issues.

Recently, the Maharashtra Government announced a revised timeline for the completion of the first phase of Mumbai Metro 3. Initially set for September 2024, the project is now expected to be finished by December 2024. This update was made during a state cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, according to a report from the news agency Mumbai Now.

The first phase of the Mumbai Metro 3 extends from SEEPZ (Santacruz Electronics Export Processing Zone) to the Bandra Kurla Complex. This underground section covers 33.5 kilometers and includes 26 stations, with the project originally slated to launch in July this year but delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

To accelerate the project, the government has allocated Rs 1,163 crore directly to the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation, bypassing the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

The project is currently nearing 98 percent completion. Due to the extended timeline and cost escalations, the budget has been adjusted to Rs 37,275.50 crore.

In addition to this, the cabinet approved a Rs 5,500 crore loan from HUDCO for the Pune Ring Road East project. For the Mumbai Metro 3 project, 535.42 hectares of the required 972.07 hectares have been acquired, supported by a government allocation of Rs 1,876.29 crore.
