Impersonators Pose as Crime Branch Officers, Steal Rs 5 Lakh from Mumbai Lawyer

Mumbai, 10th September 2024: Two unidentified men, impersonating crime branch officers, have fled with ₹ 5 lakh from a lawyer in Mumbai, according to the police. The Khar police have registered a case against the suspects, who posed as crime branch personnel and duped the lawyer under the guise of conducting an inquiry.

The victim, a 37-year-old lawyer from Bandra named Tausif Sheikh, filed a complaint with the Khar police. Sheikh’s relatives run a tourism business, handling tasks like booking tickets and transferring money. The funds they collect are deposited into the business’s account.

As per the complaint, Sheikh’s brother entrusted him with ₹ 5.70 lakh to deposit into two customer accounts. Sheikh intended to complete the deposits the following morning. After depositing ₹ 70,000 via an ATM, two men approached him at the ATM entrance, claiming to be crime branch officers, and insisted that he accompany them for questioning.

The impostors then forced Sheikh into a car, searched his bag containing the money, and questioned him about the cash. After driving a short distance, they abandoned him. Disturbed by the encounter, Sheikh returned home and informed his brother of the robbery.

Sheikh’s brother promptly reported the incident to the police, leading to the Khar police filing a case against the two suspects. An investigation is currently underway.
