Thane Police Arrest Woman for Allegedly Abandoning Newborn Sister
Thane, 9th October 2024: A 24-year-old woman was taken into custody for allegedly abandoning her sister’s newborn in Thane, Maharashtra, police reported on Wednesday. The baby girl was discovered by passersby on a road near a chawl in Bhaskar Nagar, Kalwa, around 6:15 a.m. on Tuesday, who promptly alerted local authorities.
Police arrived quickly and took the infant into their care, according to spokesperson Shailesh Salvi. Lacking immediate information about the parents, the police pursued various leads and reviewed nearby CCTV footage. Through technical and intelligence efforts, they identified the baby’s aunt within six hours.
During questioning, the aunt disclosed that the infant was her sister’s, who is currently hospitalized. She has been arrested and now faces charges under sections 91 and 93 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which address actions intended to prevent a child from being born alive or causing death after birth, as well as the exposure and abandonment of a child under 12 years by a parent or caretaker.
