Mumbai Sets New T20 Record with Highest Successful Chase in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

Mumbai, 12th December 2024: Mumbai’s dominant performance against Vidarbha on Wednesday propelled them into the semi-finals of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, as they chased down a target of 221/6 with ease. In doing so, the Shreyas Iyer-led team set a new T20 record, achieving the highest successful chase in a Men’s T20 knockout match. They became the first team to chase a target of 220 or more, surpassing the previous best of 210, set by Karachi Dolphins in the 2010 Faysal Bank T20 Cup semi-final.
In a thrilling contest, Mumbai required a strong chase, and Ajinkya Rahane delivered with an impressive 84 off 45 balls (10 fours, 3 sixes). Mumbai reached 224/4 in 19.2 overs, securing the win and a spot in Friday’s semi-final against Baroda.
Prithvi Shaw, under scrutiny, displayed his undeniable talent with a blistering 49 off 26 balls (5 fours, 4 sixes), helping Mumbai race to 83 runs in the first 7 overs. However, Shaw’s departure to left-arm pacer Dipesh Parwani triggered a brief collapse in Mumbai’s innings. Captain Shreyas Iyer (5) and India T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav (9) both fell quickly, leaving Mumbai at 118/3 after 11.1 overs, still needing 104 runs from the last eight overs.
Rahane fell at 157 in the 15th over, but Shivam Dube (37* off 22 balls, 1 four, 2 sixes) and Suyansh Shedge (36 off 12 balls, 1 four, 4 sixes) launched a brilliant counterattack, adding 67 runs in just over four overs to seal the victory. Shedge’s blistering 17th over, which went for 22 runs off off-spinner Mandar Mahale, included consecutive sixes and a four, pushing Mumbai closer to their target.
Earlier, Vidarbha had set a competitive total, with Atharva Taide (66 off 41 balls, 10 fours, 1 six), Apoorva Wankhade (51 off 33 balls, 2 fours, 3 sixes), and Shubham Dubey (43 off 19 balls, 3 fours, 3 sixes) leading the charge.
