Congress Suspends Eight Thane Unit Members for Supporting Independent Candidate

Thane, 21st December 2024: The Congress party has suspended eight members from its Thane unit for supporting an independent candidate during the recent Maharashtra assembly elections, an official confirmed on Friday.

Vikrant Chavan, the president of Congress’s Thane City district, announced the suspensions, stating that they would remain in place until further notice. He clarified that the actions of the suspended members were harmful to the party’s interests during the elections.

In addition to the suspensions, the Congress also expelled Suresh Patil-Khede, the vice president of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress OBC Cell, for six years. Patil-Khede had contested the elections as an independent candidate, which was seen as a move against the party’s objectives.

These actions come in the wake of the Congress’s disappointing performance in the Maharashtra assembly elections, where it won only 16 out of 288 seats. The results were a significant blow to the party, which has been struggling to regain its political strength in the state.

The Congress leadership has pledged to strengthen its organizational structure in Maharashtra and address internal issues that may have contributed to the poor electoral result. The disciplinary actions are part of the party’s efforts to maintain discipline and loyalty among its members, particularly during important election periods.
