Maharashtra Govt Forms Task Force to Tackle Mumbai Local Train Overcrowding Through Staggered Office Timings

Mumbai, 17th July 2025: In a major initiative aimed at easing peak-hour congestion on Mumbai’s overburdened local train network, the Maharashtra government has announced the formation of a high-level task force. The newly formed body will collaborate with private companies to implement staggered office hours as a long-term solution to the city’s transport woes.
State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik confirmed the development, stating that the task force will comprise officials from the state transport department, Indian Railways, and representatives from major corporate entities. The goal is to reduce the burden on the suburban rail network by introducing flexible working hours, such as 8 am to 4 pm or 10 am to 6 pm, instead of the standard 9-to-5 schedule.
Mumbai’s suburban train system, regarded as the city’s lifeline, serves nearly 8 million passengers daily. The rush is especially overwhelming during morning and evening peak hours, between 8 to 11 am and 5 to 8 pm, on the Western, Central, and Harbour lines. This has led to frequent overcrowding, posing safety risks and discomfort for daily commuters.
The plan will first be implemented on a pilot basis in select areas or companies. If proven effective, it will be scaled citywide. Officials believe the staggered-timing model will also contribute to easing vehicular congestion on roads during peak hours.
“This is part of our broader vision to build a more commuter-friendly transport system through government-private sector cooperation,” a senior transport official stated.
The initiative signals a shift toward sustainable and collaborative urban mobility planning in India’s financial capital.
