Harbour Line Major Expansion Ahead! Panvel Locals To Run Beyond Goregaon Up To Borivali; Big Relief For Commuters

Mumbai, 2nd June 2026: In a major boost for Mumbai suburban railway commuters, the Harbour Line is set to be extended beyond Goregaon up to Borivali. The Western Railway has taken a significant step towards the expansion project by inviting tenders for the Goregaon to Borivali Harbour Line extension.

The ambitious project is being implemented under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) 3A and is expected to provide major relief to lakhs of daily passengers travelling across Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.

At present, the Harbour Line services are limited only up to Goregaon station. Due to this limitation, commuters from Malad, Kandivali, and Borivali do not get direct access to Harbour Line connectivity. Passengers from these western suburbs currently depend heavily on Western Railway and Central Railway services to travel towards CSMT, Kurla, Wadala, Panvel, and Navi Mumbai, resulting in severe overcrowding on Western Railway local trains.

Once the Goregaon to Borivali Harbour Line extension is completed, commuters from Borivali and nearby areas will be able to directly access Harbour Line local trains. The project is expected to save travel time and provide easier connectivity to CSMT, Kurla, Vashi, Belapur, Panvel, and other parts of Navi Mumbai. Railway officials believe the extension will also help reduce passenger congestion on the Western Railway network.

However, officials have also indicated that passenger footfall is likely to increase at Jogeshwari, Ram Mandir, and Goregaon stations after the extension becomes operational, which may lead to additional crowding at these stations.

The total estimated cost of the project is ₹898.29 crore.

As part of the expansion, two major bridges and 16 minor bridges will be constructed. Four engineering designs have been prepared for the project and are currently in the final stages of approval. Necessary permissions for some bridges have already been obtained, while work on the remaining approvals is ongoing.

The Harbour Line extension up to Borivali is being considered a major milestone in Mumbai’s suburban railway network. Once completed, it is expected to provide faster, more convenient, and direct rail connectivity to millions of commuters in the western suburbs of Mumbai.
