Mumbai: FDA Raids Badlapur Bakery After Alleged Rat Droppings Found in Food Samples; Investigation Ongoing
Badlapur, 28th July 2026: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has launched an investigation and conducted a raid at an Iyengar Bakery in Badlapur West after a customer alleged that rat droppings were found inside a rava cake purchased from the outlet. Food samples have been seized and sent for laboratory analysis.
The complaint was lodged by NCP corporator Harshali Gaikwad, who claimed she had purchased a rava cake from the bakery in the Belavali area of Badlapur West. According to her, she and her family consumed the cake, following which they experienced health problems. She stated that her two daughters are currently undergoing medical treatment.
Gaikwad alleged that she discovered what appeared to be rat droppings in the cake and initially approached the bakery with the complaint. However, after receiving what she described as an unsatisfactory response, she filed an official complaint with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). She also submitted photographs and other supporting evidence to the authorities.
Acting on the complaint, the FDA’s Thane unit inspected the bakery and collected samples of the cake and other food products for laboratory examination. Officials said further action will be decided after the test reports are received.
The incident comes just days after a separate video allegedly showing rats moving inside trays containing bakery products at another bakery in Badlapur East went viral on social media, raising fresh concerns over food hygiene and safety standards in local bakeries.
The FDA has stated that it is examining the matter thoroughly and will take appropriate legal action if violations of food safety regulations are confirmed following the laboratory analysis.
