Mumbai: 38 People Rescued After Boat Breaks Down Off Gateway of India in Mumbai
Mumbai, 5th September 2026: Thirty-eight people, including 34 passengers and four crew members, were safely rescued after an excursion boat suffered an engine breakdown off the Gateway of India in Mumbai on Thursday night, officials said.
The incident occurred at around 8.30 pm when the boat, identified as ‘Anwari’, was returning to the Gateway of India after completing a half-hour sea excursion. The vessel reportedly developed an engine malfunction approximately 1.5 nautical miles off the coast.
Following an alert from the police control room, Constable Abhijit Shinde and other police personnel immediately began coordinating rescue efforts. During the operation, police officials gathered information about other vessels operating in the vicinity.
Another excursion boat, ‘Azad Hind’, was found to be near the stranded vessel. Police subsequently contacted its owner, Junaid Mulla, seeking assistance in bringing the disabled boat back to shore.
The Azad Hind reached the spot and towed the Anwari safely to Jetty No. 2 at the Gateway of India. The rescue operation was completed by approximately 9.30 pm.
All 34 passengers and four crew members were safely brought ashore, with no injuries reported in the incident.
The prompt response and coordination between the police and the local boat operator ensured the safe rescue of everyone onboard.
