Mumbai: Two Arrested For Extorting Money And Creating Fake Theft Story
Mumbai, 23rd February 2023: The Anti-extortion squad of the crime branch, on Tuesday, arrested two persons who faked the theft of 3.5 kg gold and demanded a ransom of Rs five lakh to return it. The police had registered a case on the complaint of a woman who is a gold wholesaler from Kerala. Allegedly, the accused took gold worth Rs two crores from the complainant woman and demanded a ransom of Rs five lakh to return it.
The names of the arrested accused are Mansoor Ahmed Pathan (38) and Samad Salim Khan (29), and a case has been registered against them for fraud, extortion and conspiracy. The complainant woman from Kerala buys gold jewellery wholesale from various bullion dealers and sells it through brokers in Mumbai. Accused Samad Khan was a broker in Mumbai. He used to sell gold for the complainant woman and then pay her. The complainant used to send the gold ornaments through Abdul Wasid, an employee in Mumbai. Wasid would later give the jewellery to Khan in Mumbai.
In December last year, the complainant, through Wasid, had sent three and a half kilos of gold jewellery worth Rs 1.87 crore to Khan. On 5th December, Khan went to a hotel in Sakinaka where Wasid was staying and bought the jewellery. After that, Khan told the complainant woman that the bag of gold was stolen by unknown thieves while they were going home. The complainant came to Mumbai. After that, she went to Khan’s house near Shalimar Hotel in Dongri. When questioned about the incident by the complainant, Khan admitted to having concocted it with his cousin Mansoor Pathan. He also demanded a ransom of five lakh rupees to get the jewels back. Scared, the complainant agreed to pay the money.
Mansoor sent a person named Altaf Bearing on 7th December to collect cash of Rs five lakh from the complainant and promised to send the gold. The complainant stayed at Hotel Shalimar, hoping that Altaf would bring the gold. But he did not come and his mobile phone was also found switched off. After that, the complainant went to the police station and narrated the incident. Accordingly, the police registered a case of extortion. Further, after the case was transferred to the Anti-Extortion Squad of the Crime Branch, the police arrested Samad Khan and Mansoor Pathan in this case on Tuesday.
