Mumbai: Cybercriminal Extorts Rs 81,000 From Woman Trying To Fix Set-Top Box

Mumbai, 17th March 2023: A woman called a phone number available on the internet to solve a set-top box research problem. The person she spoke to then made the woman download a remote access app on her phone. Through that, the cybercriminal withdrew Rs 81,000 from her bank account.

According to the police, the 47-year-old female complainant, a resident of Kannamwar Nagar in Vikhroli East, recharged the set-top box on 5th March. For that, she paid Rs 931. But the woman did not see the deposit nor receive any message about it. She then waited for a day and decided to call customer care the next day. For that, she searched for the number on the internet.

The woman found a helpline number on the internet. She called that number. But she could not get in touch with the customer care staff. Then she hung up the phone. After some time she got a call from an unknown number, and the person said he was speaking from customer care.

The lady mentioned her problem to the fraud customer care employee. He then asked her to download a remote access application on the phone. She followed every instruction he gave. After that, she got an OTP. The person on the other side asked her for OTP. She gave him the OTP without any hesitation. A few seconds later, she received a message that the money had been debited from her bank account.
