Mumbai Airport To Remain Closed For 6 Hours On May 2 For Repair Work
Mumbai, 4th April 2023: On May 2, 2023, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai will temporarily close both of its runways, RWY 09/27 and 14/32, from 11 am to 5 pm. for pre-monsoon maintenance and repair work, as part of its contingency plan for the rainy season. A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) has been issued in advance to inform all relevant parties, including airlines and aviation authorities. All operations will resume as usual after 5:00 p.m. on May 2, 2023.
CSMIA is one of the busiest single runway airports in the world, with nearly 900 flight movements each day, and a network of runways, taxiways, and apron covering almost 1033 acres. To maintain operational continuity during the monsoon months, timely maintenance and repair work on the runways and associated facilities is of utmost importance. This yearly practice involves engineering specialists and airside teams inspecting the runway surface for any wear and tear that may have occurred due to day-to-day operations, ensuring safety and strengthening the airside strip.
To avoid any inconvenience to its passengers, CSMIA has collaborated with multiple stakeholders, including airlines and aviation authorities, to plan the runway maintenance work meticulously. Relevant stakeholders have been informed six months in advance, allowing airlines to adjust their flight schedules accordingly.
During the critical four months of monsoon, Mumbai airport handles close to 92,000 air traffic movements, flying approximately 10 million passengers to India’s financial capital. Therefore, the maintenance work is part of the airport’s monsoon contingency plan to mitigate any possible issues that may arise due to inclement weather during the monsoon season, ensuring business continuity and assurance to all airlines and passengers that the airport functions round the clock.
CSMIA’s proactive initiatives strive to ensure operational excellence with a stronger and more dependable infrastructure. The scheduled runway maintenance and repair work is necessary to maintain high safety and security standards for airport and airside operations, providing the best standards for airlines operating to and from Mumbai and its passengers while creating better efficacy.
