Mumbai Sees Increase in Organ Donations from Relatives in Last 10 Months

Mumbai, 19th April 2023: In the last 10 months, Mumbai has witnessed an increase in organ donations from relatives, with 52 successful transplants, according to the Departmental Organ Transplantation Authority Committee. A law enacted in 1994 has been implemented since 2018 to prevent illegal organ donations in the state.

The law stipulates that organ donation surgeries can only be performed after verifying all the documents of the donor, recipient, and their families by the Divisional Organ Transplantation Committee. This committee, chaired by Cama and Albless Hospital Superintendent Dr Tushar Palve, comprises one associate professor, one microbiology professor, two Indian Medical Association members, two health service members, and one police member.

The transplant surgeries for patients who were granted permission were carried out at Global Hospital, Saifi Hospital, Sir H. N. Reliance Hospital, Wockhardt Hospital, Bombay Hospital, Jaslok, and KEM Hospital. Global Hospital has carried out 29 transplants, while Sir H. N. Hospital has performed eight, and four each at Bombay and Saifi Hospitals.

Dr. Palve said that the increased tendency of citizens to donate organs to their relatives has helped many receive organs at the right time, giving them life. However, to ensure transparency and prevent abuse, organ donors and recipients are thoroughly investigated before the surgeries are performed.
