Despite Good Rainfall, Mumbaikar To Face Water Cut From July 1

Mumbai, 28th June 2023: The city of Mumbai finds itself in an ironic predicament as continuous rainfall replenishes the water levels in the dams supplying water to the city. Despite this positive development, authorities have decided to implement a water cut starting July 1. The Mumbai Municipal Commissioner is understood to have approved a proposal sent by the water department to enforce a 10 percent reduction in water supply due to the depletion of water reserves in the dams.
All seven dams that supply water to Mumbai have a reserve of 12.57 percent. It has been raining for the last eight days, and now the rain has picked up. However, due to the lack of rainfall until the third week of June, the water storage was very depleted in these dam areas. Therefore, Additional Commissioner P. Velarasu informed that the water department has sent the proposal regarding the water reduction decision to the Commissioner for approval.
Currently, 12.57 percent of water is available with reserve in all seven dams, namely Urdhwa Vaitrana, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Madhya Vaitrana, Bhatsa, Vihar, and Tulsi, which supply water to Mumbai city. All seven dams have 1 lakh 5 thousand litres of water storage. While 75 thousand million litres from Urdhva Vaitrana Dam and 75 thousand million litres from Bhatsa Dam will get 1 lakh 50 thousand million litres more water. So, 2 lakh million litres of water are available in these dams.
