Mumbai: Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation’s Night Cleanup Nets 27 Tons of Firecracker and Flower Waste
Navi Mumbai, 16th November 2023: The Waste and Solid Management Department of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, known for its cleanliness initiatives, conducted a special cleaning campaign on the day of Lakshmi Pujan, successfully collecting nearly 27 tons of firecrackers and flower waste. The campaign carried out from 12:00 pm to 5:00 am, contributed to maintaining cleanliness across the city, earning praise from citizens.
Deputy Commissioner of the Solid Waste Department, Dr Babasaheb Rajle, along with a team of 50 colleagues, led the night cleanliness campaign in eight divisions. Despite declarations and appeals for a clean and firecracker-free Diwali, it was observed that citizens disregarded these recommendations.
While the Bombay High Court had limited the use of firecrackers to two hours, the sound of fireworks in Navi Mumbai persisted until around 2:30 am. However, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation and its cleaning staff received appreciation from citizens for their proactive cleanliness campaign conducted from midnight to 5:00 am in line with the Swachha Shahar initiative.
Between 12:00 pm and 5:00 pm on the day of Lakshmi Pujan, teams of 50 people each were deployed in all eight divisional areas of Navi Mumbai to collect firecrackers and flower waste. The campaign continued until 5:00 am, resulting in the collection of 27 tons of garbage. Consequently, the streets of Navi Mumbai remained clean in the morning after Lakshmi Pujan. Dr Babasaheb Rajle, Deputy Commissioner of Navi Mumbai Municipality, highlighted the success of the cleanliness initiative.
