Bamboo Structure Collapse Disrupts Mumbai Local Train Services Between Sion and Matunga

Mumbai, 24th July 2024: Local train operations on Mumbai’s Main Line were disrupted on Wednesday morning after a bamboo structure collapsed onto an overhead wire between Sion and Matunga stations, according to Central Railway officials.

The incident halted fast local train services for nearly an hour, significantly impacting office-goers and other passengers. Some commuters attempted to walk along the tracks, creating serious safety hazards.

Central Railway’s chief public relations officer, Swapnil Nila, explained that the bamboo structure had been set up around a nearby building. It fell onto the UP fast line (heading towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus) at approximately 7:25 am.

He added, “The incident required the power supply to the overhead wire to be switched off to remove the fallen bamboo, which led to a suspension of fast local train services. Normal operations resumed at 8:20 am.”

The disruption led to substantial delays, causing some passengers to abandon their trains and walk along the tracks. Local trains, crucial for Mumbai’s daily transport with over 7 million commuters, include around 1,810 suburban services managed by Central Railway across the Main, Harbour, Trans-Harbour, and Belapur-Uran lines.

The service interruption caused notable inconvenience to daily travellers, especially those heading to work, underscoring the challenges faced by Mumbai’s busy suburban train network.
