Electricity Theft Cases Registered in Navi Mumbai: Stone Quarry Owner Accused

Panvel, 25th February 2024: Two individuals have been booked for electricity theft in Navi Mumbai, with cases reported in the Panvel and Khandeshwar areas. Meghnath Mhatre, the owner of a stone quarry in Panvel, is accused of stealing electricity amounting to Rs 62.6 lakh over a year. The case has been registered under the Indian Electricity Act of 2003. Allegedly, Mhatre directly tapped into the Maharashtra State Electricity Board’s (MSEB) supply line for his operations.

Additionally, a separate case has been registered against Mhatre and his associate Firoz Sheikh for another instance of electricity theft in Khandeshwar, where the illegal consumption is estimated at Rs 14.8 lakh.

As of now, no arrests have been made, and an ongoing investigation aims to determine the full extent of the illegal electricity consumption. The cases highlight the efforts to curb power theft, with legal actions being taken under the relevant electricity laws.
