Hapus Mango Season to End Early; Only 10 Days Left, Say APMC Traders

Mumbai, 5 th May 2025: The much-loved season of Konkan’s Hapus mangoes is expected to end early this year, with traders at the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) in Vashi warning that only about 10 days remain to enjoy the aromatic fruit. Traditionally lasting until mid-June, this year’s season is likely to wrap up by May 10 due to reduced production caused by unseasonal rains and climate change.
Despite Akshay Tritiya being one of the most auspicious days for mango sales, traders report a disappointing consumer response this year. “Even on the muhurat day, sales were sluggish despite good availability and affordable prices,” said Pawan Wadekar, a mango trader at APMC. Traders attribute the low turnout to issues in the distribution system and a rise in direct sales bypassing wholesale markets.
Currently, around 40,000 to 50,000 boxes of Hapus arrive daily at the APMC from Konkan. Wholesale prices range between ₹1,200 to ₹1,500 per dozen. However, mango traders are concerned about declining fruit quality. “Due to the rise in the cost of ‘saka gas’ used in ripening and erratic weather, about 20 to 30 percent of mangoes are turning out to be damaged,” said Balasaheb Bhende, a trader.
With the early end to the season, there’s an urgent appeal to mango lovers to buy authentic Hapus from trusted sellers. “Beware of counterfeit mangoes being sold under the Hapus name, especially those from Karnataka,” warned Bhende. Sanjay Pansare, director of the APMC fruit market, also emphasized the need to rush to get a taste of authentic hapus before the season ends.
Mango enthusiasts are urged not to miss this short window to enjoy the king of fruits in its prime.
