IMD Predicts Increased Rainfall in Mumbai and Surrounding Areas from August 3

Mumbai, 31st July 2024: Rainfall is anticipated to intensify starting August 3 in Mumbai and surrounding areas of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the upcoming rains are expected to be less intense compared to the previous week, during which Mumbai experienced 176mm of rainfall in 24 hours ending July 22.
For Mumbai, a yellow alert has been issued beginning August 1, signalling a high probability of heavy rain in isolated areas. Additionally, a moderate rain warning has been set for July 31. On August 3, an orange alert was issued for parts of Thane and Palghar, indicating that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in several locations.
IMD officials attribute the anticipated increase in rainfall to the strengthening of westerly winds. In the 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on Tuesday, IMD’s Colaba and Santacruz observatories reported intermittent rainfall of 10.4mm and 15.5mm, respectively.
As July concludes, water levels have risen to 10.9 lakh million litres or 75% of total capacity. In comparison, water stocks were at 10.7 lakh million litres, or 74%, on the same date last year. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) lifted the 10% water cut on Monday.
