In Two Days, Two Individuals End Lives by Jumping off Mumbai’s Atal Setu Bridge

Mumbai, 3rd October 2024: In just two days, two individuals ended their lives by jumping off the Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL), also called Atal Setu.
On Wednesday around 9 am, a businessman from Matunga, Mumbai, stopped his car on Atal Setu and leapt into the sea.
The individual was identified as Phillip Shah, based on his Aadhaar card found by the authorities, who subsequently contacted his family.
According to a report by the Indian Express, police revealed that Shah had been struggling with depression for several months, which his family believes led him to take his own life.
“At around 9 am, we received information about an unidentified person who halted his vehicle on the northbound stretch, approximately 14.4 kilometers from Navi Mumbai, before jumping into the sea,” stated Anjum Bagwan, Senior Police Inspector at Nhava Sheva police station, as quoted in the report.
Police have filed a case of accidental death, and further investigation is ongoing.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the body of Sushant Chakravarti, a 40-year-old banker, was found on the seashore after he jumped off the Atal Setu.
Chakravarti, a deputy manager at a nationalized bank, had parked his SUV on the bridge near Sewri before jumping into the sea on Monday morning.
After the incident, passersby informed the authorities, prompting a search operation.
Chakravarti’s wife mentioned he had been experiencing work-related stress.
He is survived by his wife and a seven-year-old daughter, an official added.
A case of accidental death was registered in this instance as well.
The Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu, commonly referred to as the Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL), connects south Mumbai with Navi Mumbai. Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January of this year, the six-lane bridge spans 21.8 km, including a 16.5 km sea link.
