JJ Hospital Doctor Dies by Suicide After Jumping Off Atal Setu

Mumbai , 9th July 2025: Dr. Omkar Bhagwan Kavitke, a 32-year-old senior resident doctor at Mumbai’s J.J. Hospital, allegedly died by suicide late Monday night after jumping into the sea from the Atal Setu bridge. His body was recovered by authorities, and an investigation is currently underway.
Dr. Kavitke, who resided in Kalamboli, Navi Mumbai, was reportedly under mental stress for the past several days. Hospital officials confirmed that he had been advised to seek psychiatric help. Although arrangements were made to provide him with mental health support, he refused treatment, said JJ Hospital Dean Dr. Ajay Bhandarwar.
Kavitke was due for promotion to lecturer in the coming days, but colleagues noted a visible change in his behavior. He had not left behind any suicide note. Sources within the hospital suggested that personal issues, including matters related to a romantic relationship, may have contributed to his distress.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the medical community and reignited conversations around mental health support for healthcare professionals. Hospital authorities are cooperating with the police, who are currently trying to ascertain the exact cause behind the suicide.
Dr. Kavitke’s sudden death has raised serious concerns about the mental well-being of doctors working in high-pressure environments. J.J. Hospital has announced that it will strengthen mental health support systems for its staff.
