Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission Has 50 Per Cent Vacancies, Results In Several Pending Human Rights Violation Cases
Mumbai, 28th March 2023: Statistics reveal that about 50 per cent of the posts in the Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission are vacant. Out of a total of 54 posts, 28 are vacant. Hence, a large number of human rights violation cases are pending.
As many as 50 per cent of posts in the Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission are vacant. It has come to light that the commission is functioning at only 50 per cent capacity. According to information received by Advocate Karthik Jani in RTI, out of a total of 54 posts, 28 posts are vacant.
According to the data on the Human Rights Commission website, 21,820 cases are pending from 2020-21. This year, the commission disposed of a total of 1083 cases. But only 15 cases have been decided in favour of the complainants. Only 151 cases have been relieved in the last five years. Therefore, the Young Whistleblowers Foundation has asked whether the complaints coming to the Commission are false. According to the statistics of the last few years in the progress report of the commission, the total number of cases in the nine years from 2003-04 to 2011-12 is 2,012. From 2013-14 to 2020, the number is only 258. This means that after 2014, the graph of human rights violations started increasing. But compared to that, the relief provided is less.
A 50 per cent vacancy in staff has stalled the functioning of the commission and the backlog of cases is increasing as there are only three courts for the entire state. Jitendra Ghadge of ‘The Young Whistleblowers Foundation’ has demanded that the state government should immediately fill all vacancies and double the number of courts so that all the victims of human rights violations in the state get justice.
