Meteorological Department Warns of Above Average Temperatures Across Maharashtra from March to May
Pune, 2nd March 2024: This year, a heightened intensity of summer is anticipated, with temperatures expected to surpass the usual averages nationwide from March to May. Southern states, including Maharashtra, are projected to experience elevated heat waves during this period. Dr Mrityunjay Mohapatra, the Director General of the Meteorological Department, shared these insights during a press conference on the weather forecast for the upcoming months.
Last year, El Nino conditions became active in the Pacific Ocean, persisting until May, as predicted by global models. However, the current scenario indicates a reduction in the intensity of El Nino. It’s noteworthy that El Nino typically concludes with the onset of monsoon rains. Dr Mohapatra also mentioned that the Indian Ocean Dipole, a significant atmospheric component in the Indian Ocean, is expected to attain a neutral state from March to May.
Even though the intensity of El Nino is diminishing, it is anticipated to contribute to a temperature rise. Consequently, temperatures are expected to be above average from March to May, potentially leading to an increase in heat waves during the upcoming summer. Southern states, including Telangana, Maharashtra, and Odisha, may experience more pronounced heat waves. Dr Mahapatra advised citizens to exercise caution and be mindful of the challenging weather conditions.
In a contrasting forecast, above-average rainfall is predicted for March across the country. The historical average March rainfall from 1971 to 2020 stands at 29.9 mm, indicating a potential 117 % of this average for March this year. Despite the expectation of increased rainfall, Dr Mahapatra highlighted the possibility of heat waves persisting into March. Citizens are encouraged to stay informed and take necessary precautions during this period.
