Mumbai: BMC Clears 11.5 Tonnes of Waste from Marine Drive Post-Indian Cricket Team’s Victory Parade
Mumbai, 6th July 2024: Following the T20 World Cup-winning Indian Cricket Team’s parade in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) swiftly undertook a cleanup operation, clearing a staggering 11,500 kg (11.5 metric tonnes) of waste along the Marine Drive stretch.
A senior BMC official explained, “Due to the large turnout, our cleanliness efforts faced intermittent challenges. Nevertheless, by 8 am, we completed the cleanup, utilizing one compactor, one dumper, and five SCBVs. Much of the waste collected in the smaller vehicles consisted of voluminous but lightweight materials.”
In an overnight initiative, BMC mobilized its staff alongside 25 labourers sourced through NGOs to ensure the prompt removal of debris before morning foot traffic returned to the promenade on Friday.
On Thursday night, amid a massive gathering to witness the ‘Men in Blue’ on their victory parade spanning 1.7 km from the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) to Wankhede Stadium, the area was inundated with litter. Plastic bottles, wrappers, cups, paper, clothing, and even footwear were among the items left behind by enthusiastic fans.
Responding swiftly, BMC’s night cleanup operation, supported by NGO labourers, utilized a dumper and compactor to handle over nine metric tonnes of waste. Additionally, five small closed-body vehicles were filled with miscellaneous items like shoes and slippers, which were later sorted at Suraksha Garden. Each SCBV can hold up to 500 kg of material.
Citizens took to social media to commend BMC’s efforts, with @ivaibhavk sharing a video praising the sanitation workers for restoring Marine Drive to its pristine condition before dawn, following a night of jubilant celebrations and subsequent cleanup efforts.
