Mumbai: BMC Installs AI Camera in Mahim to Detect Garbage Dumping, Issue Warnings

BMC

Mahim, 29th October 2026: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has installed an AI-powered camera at Gajanan Vatika on Dr Raykar Marg in Mahim to detect suspected garbage dumping and issue instant audio warnings. The camera has been deployed by the civic body’s G/North ward at a location identified as a garbage-vulnerable point (GVP).

In a video shared on its official X account on Thursday, October 29, the BMC demonstrated how the system tracks a person approaching a roadside with a green plastic bag. The footage shows the camera highlighting the person’s movements through visual indicators before an audio warning is played through a loudspeaker, asking them not to litter and to keep the area clean.

The civic body plans to install similar AI-enabled cameras at other locations across Mumbai in the coming days. The initiative aims to discourage people from dumping household waste and other garbage along roadsides and in public spaces.

However, the BMC’s announcement does not specify whether the new system will automatically issue fines or how repeat violations will be handled.

The move comes amid the civic body’s wider efforts to address recurring garbage accumulation at identified dumping spots. In August 2026, the BMC announced a citywide cleanliness drive that included CCTV monitoring of garbage-vulnerable points, penalties for illegal dumping and assessments of shortcomings in waste collection, transportation and manpower.

The BMC had also planned CCTV surveillance at five chronic unauthorised dumping spots in R-Central ward in 2024. At the time, officials said camera footage and alerts to ward control rooms would help identify offenders and enable action, including fines or FIRs in serious cases.

The latest AI-enabled system adds real-time movement tracking and audio warnings to these monitoring efforts. While social media users have welcomed the initiative, some have also called for stricter action against people who continue dumping waste despite receiving warnings.

The effectiveness of the system will depend on its implementation across dumping hotspots, along with continued waste collection and enforcement measures.
