Mumbai: BMC Launches Fast-Track, Weekend Marriage Registration Services With Expanded Access

Mumbai, 27th September 2025: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has rolled out online applications for its newly launched fast-track and weekend marriage registration services, offering greater convenience to couples across the city.

Officials said the move also expands registration to include Christian, Jewish, and Parsi couples from the same faith. For Sikh couples, the registration facility has been extended to cover marriages under the Anand Marriage Act, 1909, in addition to existing provisions.

“Couples who have married anywhere in the world can now register their marriage in the BMC ward where either partner resides. This removes the earlier restriction that registration could only be done if the wedding took place in Maharashtra,” said a senior BMC official.

The civic body has also introduced QR-coded marriage certificates, which can be verified instantly, and officials added that these certificates may soon be available through DigiLocker.

With the discontinuation of manual applications for regular marriage registrations, couples can now book appointments online, said the official. Services such as issuing certificates and photographs of married couples are also accessible digitally.

Previously, only Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist, Sikh, and Jain couples could register marriages at civic offices. The new policy now includes couples from other religions as well.

As part of the weekend service, BMC offices will be open on Sundays from 9 am to 1 pm. Additionally, 20% of weekday slots will be reserved for same-day registration and certificate issuance under the fast-track service. Couples opting for either service must submit all required documents, pay the regular registration fee plus an additional Rs 2,500, and appear in person with witnesses.
