Mumbai Coastal Road Opens North-Bound Carriageway from Haji Ali to Worli
Mumbai, 11th July 2024: A 3.5-km segment of the northbound carriageway of Mumbai’s Coastal Road was inaugurated for vehicular traffic at 7 am on Thursday. This section, stretching from Haji Ali to Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road in Worli, is part of the larger Mumbai Coastal Road Project, which spans nearly 12 km. The aim is to ease travel times from south Mumbai to the suburbs by providing an alternative route that bypasses traffic congestions typically experienced between Haji Ali and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link.
Officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) confirmed the opening and specified that the carriageway will be operational from Monday to Friday, between 7 am and 11 pm. However, the corridor’s availability is temporary, with closures scheduled on weekends to facilitate the completion of remaining project tasks.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, accompanied by municipal commissioner Bhushan Gagrani and other senior officials, inspected the stretch on Wednesday. During the inspection, Shinde emphasized that the Coastal Road Project is 91 % complete and urged authorities to expedite the remaining work.
The BMC initially opened a 9.5-km south-bound corridor from Bindu Madhav Chowk in Worli to Marine Drive in the project’s first phase on March 11. Subsequently, a 6.25-km northbound carriageway between Marine Drive and Lotus Junction at Haji Ali was opened in the next phase on June 10.
Managed by the BMC, the Mumbai Coastal Road Project aims to establish a direct link to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, aiming to decrease travel time between south Mumbai and the suburbs, thus improving overall commuting convenience. The project, which commenced construction on October 13, 2018, is progressing towards its completion, with a total estimated cost of Rs 13,983 crore.
