Mumbai: COVID Crisis Scandal: Mumbai Municipal Corporation Faces Heat In Remdesivir Procurement Scam
Mumbai, 22nd October 2023: In a shocking revelation, the Economic Offences Wing of the Mumbai Police has registered a case against the Mumbai Municipal Corporation in connection with the Remdesivir injection procurement scam during COVID time.
A few weeks ago, Kirit Somaiya complained to the Mumbai police, Enforcement Directorate (ED), and Income Tax Department about the misappropriation of more than 1000 Remdesivir injections from the Mumbai Municipal Corporation during the Corona period. Acting on that complaint, the Mumbai police took this action yesterday.
After conducting a preliminary inquiry in this regard, the Economic Offences Wing of the Mumbai Police has now registered a case, alleging that the purchase department of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation has procured thousands of Remdesivir opaquely from pharmaceutical companies.
As per the complaint, the Mumbai Municipal Corporation purchased one Remdesivir injection for Rs 1600 in the year 2021, despite having a contract for Rs 665. At the end of 2021, the price of Remdesivir injections skyrocketed to Rs 4,300 per injection.
There are allegations that there is no documented record of the distribution of remdesivir injections, which were purchased for a significant amount of money. A complainant has called for an in-depth investigation into the case to determine how these injections were distributed during the Corona period.
