Mumbai Faces Major Flight Disruptions as Air India Cancels Services After Volcanic Ash Alert
Mumbai, 25th November 2025: Air travel in and out of Mumbai faced significant disruption after Air India cancelled several domestic and international flights for November 24 and 25, following safety concerns arising from the Hayli Gubbi volcanic eruption. The airline said the move was mandatory after some of its aircraft flew over regions suspected to contain volcanic ash.
Air India explained that volcanic ash poses severe risks to aircraft — potentially damaging engines and vital systems — making comprehensive inspections essential before any further operations. The airline issued an advisory on Sunday detailing the extent of the cancellations.
Flights cancelled for November 24 include:
Newark–Delhi (AI 106)
New York JFK–Delhi (AI 102)
Dubai–Hyderabad (AI 2204)
Doha–Mumbai (AI 2290)
Dubai–Chennai (AI 2212)
Dammam–Mumbai (AI 2250)
Doha–Delhi (AI 2284)
For November 25, domestic routes were affected, such as:
Chennai–Mumbai (AI 2822)
Hyderabad–Delhi (AI 2466)
Mumbai–Hyderabad–Mumbai (AI 2444, AI 2445)
Mumbai–Kolkata–Mumbai (AI 2471, AI 2472)
Ground teams in Mumbai and other airports have been assisting passengers with rebooking, hotel arrangements and real-time updates. While travellers expressed disappointment online, many acknowledged the airline’s readiness to support affected customers.
Air India apologised for the inconvenience, stating that passenger and crew safety remains its top priority. The airline added that normal operations will resume once all aircraft complete the required technical inspections to rule out ash-related damage.
