Mumbai: Majiwada-Wadpe Highway 75% Complete, Full Access Only After November

Thane 7th June 2025: Despite the inauguration of the final stretch of the 701-km Nagpur-Mumbai Samruddhi Mahamarg from Igatpuri to Amne on Thursday, commuters heading to Mumbai and Thane continue to face major traffic congestion near the Amne entry point due to incomplete road infrastructure.

The eight-laning of the 23.5 km Majiwada-Wadpe stretch on National Highway 3. crucial for connecting the Samruddhi Highway to Mumbai is only 75% complete. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), which took over the project in 2021, now aims to finish the remaining work and open the stretch to full capacity by November 2025.

The delay has caused frustration among daily commuters and long-distance travelers, who find themselves stuck in long traffic jams between Wadpe and Majiwada. Vehicles traveling smoothly from Nagpur on the Samruddhi Expressway face bottlenecks after reaching Amne, making it difficult to reach Mumbai and Thane quickly.

Originally awarded to a contractor in 2019, the project was delayed due to non-commencement of work. MSRDC took over in 2021, but construction only began in 2022 due to delayed forest clearances. The project cost, estimated at ₹1,100 crore, is being funded by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

Along with road widening, key bridge infrastructure on the route is also underway 75% of the Kasheli creek bridge and 95% of the Kalwa creek bridge work has been completed, according to MSRDC officials.

Until completion, drivers must brace for continued congestion. The civic body has assured that efforts are being made to complete the remaining work and ensure smooth travel on this vital Mumbai-Nashik link by year-end.
