Mumbai: Major Drug Bust at CSMI Airport, Ugandan National Arrested

Mumbai, 11th August 2023: In a significant operation conducted by the Department of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), a male Ugandan passenger was apprehended under suspicion of drug trafficking at the CSMI Airport on Monday, August 7, 2023. Acting on specific intelligence, DRI officers intercepted the passenger upon his arrival.

Upon thorough questioning, the passenger confessed to swallowing capsules containing illegal drugs, with the intention of smuggling them into India. Following the arrest, the suspect was presented before a Magistrate, and in accordance with the court’s directive, he was admitted to Mumbai’s JJ Hospital for medical examination and treatment.

Subsequent investigations led to the discovery of a staggering 65 capsules, collectively weighing 785 grams, filled with cocaine. The estimated street value of the seized cocaine amounts to a substantial Rs. 7.85 Crores. The seizure took place on Thursday, August 10, 2023, under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.

The arrested Ugandan national is now facing charges under the NDPS Act, 1985. Authorities are actively pursuing an extensive investigation to uncover any potential links to an international drug smuggling syndicate operating in India.
