Mumbai Metro 11 Project Approved: New Anik Depot–Gateway of India Corridor to Transform South Mumbai Commute

Mumbai, 11th October 2025: With the Aqua Line now fully operational, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) has launched its next ambitious project: Mumbai Metro 11. The Maharashtra Cabinet approved the project on September 3, marking an extension of Metro Route-4, connecting Anik Depot, Wadala, and the iconic Gateway of India. The project is estimated to cost Rs 23,487.51 crore and is designed to serve as a state-of-the-art underground public transportation system in some of South Mumbai’s busiest areas.

The proposed 17.51 km corridor will significantly reduce traffic congestion while offering an environmentally friendly, efficient commuting option. Key areas along the route include Nagpada and Bhendi Bazaar, known for their high population density and heavy vehicular traffic.

Project Design and Construction
Of the 17.51 km route, 16.83 km will be underground, while only 0.667 km will be at-grade. Following lessons from the 33.5 km Metro 3 project, Metro 11 will employ advanced construction techniques to enhance safety and efficiency. The project will combine cut-and-cover methods at eight locations with the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) at five critical points. MMRCL aims to minimize disruption in densely populated urban areas while ensuring modern metro infrastructure standards.

Connectivity and Interchanges
Metro 11 will integrate with existing and future transport networks, including Mumbai Metro 3, the suburban railway network (stations like Byculla, CSMT, and Thane–Kasarvadavali), and the monorail system. Strategic interchanges will ensure seamless connectivity for passengers, allowing smoother transfers across different modes of public transport.

The Anik–Pratiksha Nagar depot, spanning 16 hectares, will serve as the operational hub for Metro 11, ensuring efficient coordination with other transport services. The trains will operate with six coaches per set, providing enhanced capacity for commuters.

Projected Passenger Traffic
According to MMRCL projections, Metro 11 is expected to serve approximately 5.8 lakh passengers daily by 2031. This figure is expected to rise to 8.69 lakh by 2041, 9.8 lakh by 2051, and 10.12 lakh by 2055, reflecting the growing demand for urban public transport in South Mumbai.

Stations and Key Locations
The route will include 14 stations, 13 of which will be underground. Key stops are Anik Depot, Wadala Depot, CGS Colony, Ganesh Nagar, BPT Hospital, Shivdi Metro Station, Hey Bunder, Darukhana, Byculla Metro Station, Nagpada Junction, Bhendi Bazaar, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus Metro Station, Horniman Circle, and Gateway of India.

Once completed, Metro 11 is expected to transform commuting in South Mumbai, easing traffic congestion, improving the quality of life, and supporting the city’s sustainable development goals.
