Mumbai Metro 3 Records Highest Daily Ridership as Phase 2A Opens

Mumbai, 12th May 2025: Mumbai Metro Line 3 witnessed its highest daily ridership yet as Phase 2A—connecting Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) to Acharya Atre Chowk—opened to the public. On its first full day of operations, Saturday, the underground corridor recorded 32,791 passengers.

The 33.5-km Colaba–Bandra–SEEPZ–Aarey Metro Line 3 marked a major milestone with trains beginning service between Aarey and Acharya Atre Chowk from 6:30 a.m. Five new stations, including key hubs like BKC and Acharya Atre Chowk, were inaugurated, enhancing accessibility in important commercial and residential areas.

Despite it being a weekend, commuter response was enthusiastic. Many were first-time or casual riders exploring the new stretch or visiting nearby landmarks such as the Siddhivinayak Temple. According to the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC), 26,758 passengers had travelled by 8 p.m., rising to 29,750 by 9 p.m., and reaching 32,791 by 10:30 p.m.

Of the total, 16,377 passengers travelled between BKC and Acharya Atre Chowk, while 14,400 commuted between BKC and Aarey. The numbers represent a significant jump from the previous daily ridership average of around 20,000, which typically declined further on weekends and public holidays.

The surge in ridership highlights growing public interest in the metro as a convenient transit option. MMRC officials expect numbers to rise steadily as additional phases are launched and the full line becomes operational. On April 26, just a week before the Phase 2A launch, total ridership stood at only 12,766—underscoring the impact of the extension.

With improved connectivity and more stations now functional, Metro Line 3 is poised to play a crucial role in easing Mumbai’s traffic woes and modernizing its urban transport system.
