Mumbai: Outpatient Services In Hospitals Smooth, Inpatient Services Impacted Due To Strike

Mumbai, 14th March 2023: The strike called by the state government-semi-government employees, teachers and non-teaching staff unions since Tuesday to demand immediate implementation of the old pension scheme has had little impact on patient care. It was noticed that the services in the outpatient department of the hospitals were smooth, but the services in the inpatient department and surgery were affected.
The health workers have also participated in the strike called by the State Employees Association for various demands, including that the old pension scheme should be implemented immediately, vacancies in various government departments should be filled, and all contractual employees should be retained in service. Inter-patient care has been affected as nurses and third and fourth-grade staff have participated in the strike. In the outpatient department, the head of the department, professors, and resident doctors were trying to ensure smooth patient care. Due to the strike, the outpatient department was sparsely crowded. As 50 substitute employees of the J J hospital did not participate in the strike, the hospital administration was able to provide patient care. Similarly, as some employees of other hospitals did not participate in the strike, services in the outpatient and intensive care units were not affected much.
Critical surgeries were performed at St. George’s Hospital and Cama Hospital.
Meanwhile, the strike has been 100 per cent successful and, none of the third and fourth-grade employees, as well as nurses, have reported to work.
If the strike continues, more employees will be hired from the Municipal Corporation.
State government hospitals have been informed that new patients and patients for important surgeries should be sent to municipal hospitals. Also, J. J.’s 10 nurses have been sent in each shift on the first day in the hospital. Trainee nurses and health workers, sweepers will also be sent to other hospitals.
