Andheri, 30th September 2023: In a recent development, Meghwadi police apprehended two individuals for their alleged involvement in the illicit sale of ambergris, commonly known as whale fish vomit, in the Andheri area. The seized contraband, weighing approximately one kilogram, is valued at more than Rs 1 crore in the international market.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Rupesh Ram Pawar and Pradeep Kale. Pawar, one of the accused in this case, is an engineer hailing from Ratnagiri, while Pradeep Kale resides in Mahim Koliwada. Authorities are now investigating the source of the whale ambergris in their possession.

Whale ambergris is in high demand abroad, primarily for its use in the production of perfumes. Due to its exorbitant value, ambergris is frequently subject to illegal trade.

The police’s attention was drawn to the illegal sale of ambergris in the Meghwadi area of Andheri following a tip-off from the person (identity not revealed). Acting swiftly, a team from the Meghwadi police department arrived at the scene and observed suspicious behaviour exhibited by the two suspects. Upon inspection of their belongings, the police found one kilogram of whale ambergris. Subsequently, the confiscated ambergris has been sent to a forensic laboratory for further detailed examination.

Both the accused have confessed their intention to sell the ambergris, primarily due to their dire financial circumstances. Pawar, in particular, is currently unemployed and is believed to have resorted to the illegal ambergris trade as a means of earning quick money for his livelihood. The police are now tracing the origin of the whale ambergris and are exploring the possibility of additional individuals being involved in this case.
