Mumbai Police File Case Against Impersonator Who Stole Rs 20 Lakh from Dadar Residence

Mumbai, 7th August 2024: In Mumbai, police have initiated a case against an individual accused of impersonating a CID officer, forcibly entering a residence in Dadar early Sunday morning, and stealing ₹20 lakh.

The complainant, Karan Balaya, 28, who works for a grain wholesaler, had been entrusted with cash by his employer for safekeeping. According to police, Balaya, who is responsible for securing the cash in his employer’s absence, had stored ₹20 lakh in a cupboard at his home about a month ago.

Balaya mentioned that only his wife and nephew were aware of the cash’s presence. On Saturday, after returning home around 11:30 pm, Balaya and his family went to bed. At approximately 3:45 am on Sunday, they were disturbed by someone knocking on their door.

When Balaya’s wife opened the door, the intruder, posing as a CID officer, forced his way in and began searching the house. The imposter claimed he was recording the “raid” and began rummaging through Balaya’s belongings while threatening him not to interfere.

The intruder, after a brief conversation on his phone, allegedly took the cash bag and exited the premises. Balaya attempted to follow him to retrieve the money but was warned not to disclose the incident. The imposter also verbally abused Balaya before leaving.

Feeling overwhelmed, Balaya delayed reporting the crime but eventually informed his employer the following morning. Realizing it was a robbery, the businessman advised Balaya to file a police report.

The Dadar police have filed a case under charges of impersonation, fraud, and trespassing. They are currently examining CCTV footage and investigating the possibility of insider involvement in the crime.
