Mumbai Residents Can Now Avail Free Debris Collection Through Toll-Free Helpline

Mumbai, 13th December 2024: To simplify and improve debris disposal in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched an enhanced version of the Debris on Call service. Under this revamped system, residents can avail free collection of up to 500 kg of debris. Bookings can be made by calling a toll-free number between 8 am and 8 pm, with plans to extend the service to the MyBMC mobile app. Residents in Mumbai City and the eastern suburbs can call 1800-202-6364, while those in the western suburbs can call 1800-210-9976.

A BMC official highlighted that the initiative to waive charges for up to 500 kg of debris collection will significantly aid residential areas. Contractors have been appointed to manage collection and recycling processes, with two debris processing plants located at Shilphata, Daighar village near Kalyan, and Dahisar. Each plant can recycle 600 metric tonnes of debris daily. Waste from the city and eastern suburbs will be processed at Kalyan, while the western suburbs’ debris will be handled at Dahisar.

Recycled debris will be converted into sand-like byproducts, which can be used in manufacturing non-structural items such as paver blocks, dividers, footpath stones, and benches. For debris exceeding 500 kg, charges will vary based on distance and volume. However, the free collection limit is expected to be highly beneficial for households, especially during minor repairs that generate minimal debris.

The Debris on Call service, initially launched in 2014, faced limited success due to the need for ward-specific landline numbers. The introduction of a centralized helpline and free disposal for smaller quantities aims to encourage broader participation this time.
