Mumbai: Section of MHADA Building Collapses in Byculla, Prompting Evacuations of Residents and Shops

Mumbai, 9th October 2024: A section of a ground-plus-three-storey MHADA building collapsed on Maulana Azad Road in Madanpura, Byculla (W), around 12:40 PM on Tuesday. According to a statement from the BMC, 30 residential units and eight shops in the Karim Building were evacuated. Advocate Zubair Azmi, who lives across from the building, noted, “The structure was not categorized as extremely dangerous.”

A contractor from the repair board was conducting maintenance work on the building when workers noticed plaster falling while setting up a support structure. This served as a warning sign. Residents evacuated independently before the collapse occurred. With over 130 residents affected, arrangements are being made to accommodate them in a transit camp.
