Mumbai Sees Uptick in COVID-19 Cases in May; BMC Urges Calm

Mumbai, 20th May 2025: Mumbai is witnessing a gradual rise in COVID-19 cases this May after several months of low numbers, according to data from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). While health officials are closely monitoring the situation, the civic body has urged citizens not to panic.
Between January and April 2025, COVID-19 cases in the city remained minimal. However, with the onset of May, there has been a slight increase in infections, mirroring trends in regions like Singapore, Hong Kong, and East Asia, where coronavirus numbers are also climbing.
Amid the rising cases, two COVID-19-related deaths—a 14-year-old girl and a 54-year-old woman—were reported at KEM Hospital. The news initially sparked concern, but hospital authorities clarified that the fatalities were caused by other health complications, including nephrotic syndrome with hypocalcemic seizure and cancer, and not directly due to COVID-19.
The BMC’s health department is keeping a close watch on the situation and has appealed to residents to avoid self-medication and consult doctors immediately if they experience any symptoms. Civic officials emphasized the need for early diagnosis and treatment to prevent complications.
To handle a potential rise in cases, municipal hospitals are equipped with necessary infrastructure. Seven Hills Hospital currently has 20 MICU beds, 20 beds for children and pregnant women, and 60 general beds. Additionally, Kasturba Hospital has prepared a 10-bed special ICU unit, along with two general ICU beds. The BMC has stated that capacity will be increased as needed.
Authorities continue to emphasize that while the situation is under control, public cooperation, vigilance, and timely medical attention remain key to preventing further spread of the virus.
