Mumbai: Six Tonnes of Banned Plastic Seized in Diwali Preparations by Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation

Vasai, 6th November 2023: In preparation for Diwali, the Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation has heightened its efforts to combat single-use plastics. Following Municipal Commissioner Anil Kumar Pawar’s directive, a raid was conducted on Sunday morning (5th) in Mahavir Dham Society of Achole in Municipal Ward Committee ‘D.’ Under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner Sukhdev Darveshi, a substantial amount of prohibited plastic, totalling six tonnes, was confiscated.

Assistant Commissioner Sukhdev Darveshi received information about a shop owner, Vinod Mali, storing banned plastic in a warehouse within Mahavir Dham Society in Nalasopara-Achole. Subsequently, he inspected the shop.

The investigation uncovered materials like bags and spoons, all measuring less than 50 microns in thickness, stored in 235 large bags. The market value of this plastic is approximately eight lakh rupees. A proper investigation was conducted before seizing the plastic, and the shop owner, Vinod Mali, was fined Rs 10,000.

Remarkably, this shop had already faced previous plastic confiscation actions. Despite this, the shop owner continued openly selling prohibited plastic, as noted by the Assistant Commissioner. This marks the fourth consecutive action taken under the leadership of Sukhdev Darveshi as part of the municipal corporation’s intensified campaign against single-use plastics. Once again, the municipal corporation has seized plastic worth a substantial amount in this operation.
