Mumbai Tech Professional Accuses Rapido Driver of Abuse and Threats Over Fare Dispute

Mumbai, 20th December 2024: A Mumbai-based tech professional has accused a Rapido driver of abuse and threats after he attempted to overcharge her and then demanded she cancel the ride when she refused. Ohshin Bhat shared a screenshot of the driver’s offensive message on the social media platform X.

Bhat explained that she had booked a ‘Rapido Economy’ ride but was assigned a Premium vehicle. Typically, Economy rides cost less and use hatchbacks, while Premium rides use sedans. However, the driver had listed his Premium vehicle under the Economy category, likely to attract more bookings. When Bhat declined to pay the extra charge, the driver became abusive and insisted she cancel the ride.

According to the screenshot Bhat posted, the driver sent her a threatening message: “Pel dunga” (“I will beat you up”). He also insulted her, calling her “Bhikhari ki aulad” (“Child of a beggar”). When she refused to engage, the driver escalated his hostility, telling her, “Saste me chahiye paidal ja” (“Walk if you want to save money”).

Eventually, Bhat booked an Uber and left the location, while the driver cancelled the ride. Rapido responded with an apology, promising to investigate the incident.

“We fully understand the seriousness of this matter and deeply apologize for the captain’s unprofessional behaviour. As requested earlier, kindly share the ride details via DM so we can take action against the captain and update you accordingly,” Rapido Cares posted on X.

This incident adds to a growing list of complaints about cab drivers using threatening or disrespectful language toward passengers. Many users expressed shock at the driver’s behaviour and urged Rapido to take appropriate action. One user asked, “Why is it always Rapido?” while another shared a similar experience with the company’s customer service.
