Mumbai to Malvan in Just 4 Hours: Ro-Ro Ferry and Water Taxi Services Set to Launch Soon

Mumbai, 28th May 2025: In a significant move to improve coastal connectivity and ease travel, the Maharashtra government is set to launch high-speed Ro-Ro ferry and water taxi services across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The new service will allow commuters to travel from Mumbai to Malvan in just four hours, a journey that currently takes over 12 hours by road.

State Port Minister Nitesh Rane confirmed on Tuesday that a detailed project report (DPR) has been completed, with eight to nine routes identified for the upcoming water-based transport system. “This initiative will transform how people travel along the Konkan coast,” Rane said.

The water taxi service will initially operate 30-seater electric vessels from key locations such as the Gateway of India to popular tourist destinations including Alibaug and Elephanta Island. The service aims to offer a faster, eco friendly, and affordable travel option for daily commuters and tourists alike.

The Maharashtra Maritime Board will oversee operations to ensure safety, affordability, and sustainability. To support this green initiative, 15 electric vessels are being procured from Candela Cruise, a Swedish company known for its cutting-edge marine technology. The first two vessels are expected to arrive in August.

This new waterway project is part of a broader effort by the state to reduce traffic congestion, boost tourism, and offer alternative transport options. With the Ganesh festival and holiday season approaching, the timing of the launch is expected to bring considerable relief to travelers, especially those heading to Konkan.

Once operational, the Mumbai-Malvan sea route will be a game changer, offering speed, comfort, and scenic travel along Maharashtra’s coastline.
