Mumbai Traffic Police Implements Revised Speed Limits on Key Roads

Mumbai, 13th December 2023: The Mumbai Traffic Police has implemented new speed limits on nine key roads in the city, effective from today. The initiative aims to prevent danger, obstruction, and inconvenience to the public. The revised speed limits apply to all types of vehicles within Mumbai’s jurisdiction.

In South Mumbai, the speed limit on P. D’Mello Road at Shahid Bhagat Singh Road is set at 50 kmph. Similarly, a 50 kmph limit is imposed from Godrej Junction to the Opera House at Maharshi Karve Road and from Haji Ali Junction to Mahalaxmi Railway Station on Keshavrao Khade Marg.

In Worli, the Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road, spanning Bindu Madhav Chowk to Dr Keshav Balram Hedgewar Chowk (Love Grove) Junction, has a speed limit of 60 kmph.

Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) sees a speed limit of 60 kmph from Diamond Junction to MTNL Junction at Avenue-1.

The Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR), a vital east-west suburban connector, has a suggested speed limit of 70 kmph. However, specific areas like the bridge ramps, turns, and curves of JVLR maintain a speed limit of 30 kmph to prevent mishaps.

In Chembur, the Veer Jijamata Bhosle Flyover has a speed limit of 60 kmph, with a reduced limit of 40 kmph on the ascent and descent of the flyover. The new flyover at Chheda Nagar also maintains a speed limit of 60 kmph. The Amar Mahal Flyover has a speed limit of 70 kmph, except for its ascent and descent, where the limit is reduced to 40 kmph.

Citizens have expressed varied reactions, with some finding the road-specific speed limits impractical, considering the dynamic traffic conditions. Critics argue that the move may serve as an opportunity for increased fines and potential corruption within the traffic police force. Concerns about road conditions, speed breakers, hawkers, and pedestrians are also raised in response to the new speed limits.
