Mumbai Woman Dies After Being Hit by Out-of-Control BEST Bus Driven by Drunk Passenger

Mumbai, 3rd September 2024: A 27-year-old woman who was injured after being struck by an out-of-control BEST bus in Mumbai’s Lalbaug area succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment, police reported on Monday. The incident occurred on Sunday night when the bus driver lost control of the vehicle after a drunk passenger grabbed the steering wheel during an argument. The bus subsequently crashed into pedestrians, cars, and two-wheelers, resulting in ten injuries, with three individuals sustaining serious wounds.

The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) Undertaking operates as the transportation division of Mumbai’s civic body, the BMC.

One of the injured, identified as Nupura Maniyar, was pronounced dead late Sunday night at KEM Hospital. Several of the injured remain hospitalized at the same facility, according to police and civic officials on Monday.

The drunk passenger, identified as 45-year-old Datta Shinde, has been arrested and charged under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS). An investigation into the incident is ongoing, the official added.

A police official detailed that the electric bus on Route 66, traveling from Ballard Pier in south Mumbai to Rani Laxmibai Chowk in Sion, was involved in the crash near Ganesh Talkies in Lalbaug.
